“Most of the people say, well, that guy was crazy to plant those things [grapes]. He’s lucky he didn’t lose his shirt.” – Josh Jensen

You may already know that at Calera we believe very strongly in growing our grapes on limestone derived soils. We consider this geology a key factor in the soil of some of the world’s most revered vineyards. Therefore, this is our premiere wine club for those who must have the absolute best. Limestone is a sedimentary mineral and is exceptionally rare in California – there are no mapped deposits in either Napa or Sonoma Counties -- thus our special mountain-top site with the beautifully preserved calera (“limekiln” in Spanish) was an exceptional find. We know that the wines you’ll receive through this club will also be unique and special. Our Mt. Harlan Vineyards have all been planted down-slope from actual deposits of limestone, and we feel that makes them capable of producing highly complex, age-worthy wines.

The Limestone Circle’s offer is a special selection of our "single vineyard" Mt. Harlan wines. Each shipment includes a selection of four bottles of Mt. Harlan Pinot Noirs, and two bottles of Mt. Harlan Chardonnay or Mt. Harlan Viognier.

We will admit it, we are soil geeks, so we wanted the wine club names to reflect that. Calcite is composed of the same chemical compound, calcium carbonate (CaCO3) as limestone. Calcite is the crystalline form; it looks like quartz crystals. Marble and chalk are also composed of calcium carbonate. These are all different physical forms of the same chemical compound. You have to look long and hard to find pieces of calcite in our largest limestone deposit, but it can be done. Our theory is that the purer the CaCO3 from which a vineyard’s soil is derived, whether it’s limestone, calcite, marble or chalk, the greater the wine can be. Our main deposit has tested at 99.5% pure calcium carbonate.

The Calcite Circle’s offer is a delightful assortment of wines from both our Mt. Harlan and Central Coast wines. Each shipment includes two bottles of Mt. Harlan Pinot Noirs, one bottle of either Mt. Harlan Chardonnay or Mt. Harlan Viognier, and three bottles of Central Coast Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

The Calcite Circle's (Just Pinots) offer is a special selection of our "single vineyard" Mt. Harlan and Central Coast wines. Each shipment includes a selection of six bottles of Mt. Harlan and Central Coast Pinot Noirs.

Think of dolomite as a first cousin of limestone. Technically, dolomite is a carbonate of calcium and magnesium. We don’t have any commercial deposits of dolomite on our mountain vineyard property, but at our winemaking facility site three miles to the north and a thousand feet lower in elevation than our vineyard property, our next-door neighbor is a commercial dolomite quarry. Dolomite can be used in a number of industrial applications and as an additive to potting soil or in your home aquarium, where it acts to lower the acidity in the soil or water. You may also know its namesake in Italy, the Dolomite Alps, which is great for skiing but far too snowy to grow grapes.

The Dolomite Circle’s offer is a delicious medley of Calera wines made from Central Coast grapes, with sometimes a bottle or two of Mt. Harlan wine.

For those of you who want it all, we invite you to join our Chairmen's Club where you'll essentially receive two Limestone Circle shipments twice a year. In other words, you'll receive 12 bottles of our "single vineyard" Mt. Harlan wines in each shipment.

Shipment Price: $380-$560
