A philosophy of “sustainable
agriculture” defines Calera’s farming practices, with organic farming
methods being employed wherever and whenever possible. The dry climate
of Mt. Harlan reduces the need for extensive use of pesticides and
when the need arises, organic products are used. Cover crops are
planted each year, and tilled under to improve soil nutrient levels.
Compost mixtures are applied periodically to further enhance the
organic content of the mountain soils.
The vines are tended by a dedicated vineyard crew who spend many
hours pruning, suckering and training the vines, to ensure vine
balance and appropriate sunlight exposure for the maturing fruit.
With crops rarely exceeding two tons to the acre, quality not quantity
is the goal in these exceptional vineyards.
