Mills :: 2001 Pinot Noir
The 2001 Mills Vineyard Pinot Noir is a dark, rich, robust wine. Classic varietal aromas mix with scents of strawberry and sweet black plum. Ripe fruit flavors are accented by an appealing spiciness and an underpinning of subtle toasty oak. On the palate this wine offers a lush, sensuous structure balanced with bright acid and dense, well-integrated tannins. This wine promises to age to elegant perfection over the next several years.
Lovely mild spring weather and a fairly warm summer in 2001 gave us grapes with volumes of varietal character and sweetness. The fruit was hand picked in early September and then whole cluster fermented, with indigenous yeast in small open-top fermenters. The wines were pressed after 14 days and racked by gravity to barrels following overnight settling. Aged without racking in Francois Freres barrels, 30% new, for sixteen months, the lots were combined prior to bottling and the wine was bottled unfiltered.
